How much does children's product testing cost? What drives the quote
Seller-reported CPC test quotes range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. What changes the price, and how to avoid paying twice.
The problem
Sellers on r/FulfillmentByAmazon report quotes from roughly $180 to $300 at labs in China for simple items, and $1,200 to $3,000+ for toys or for U.S. testing. These are anecdotes, not price lists; your quote depends on:
- Which rules apply (lead content, lead in paint, phthalates, ASTM F963, small parts, flammability, product-specific standards).
- The number of components, materials and colors: chemical tests are typically per material/color.
- Lab location and turnaround.
- Whether your supplier already has valid component test reports you can rely on (16 CFR part 1109 allows component part testing in some cases).
Paying twice usually happens when the report omits a rule, names the wrong product, or the lab isn't accepted for a cited rule.
How to fix it
- Use CPSC's Regulatory Robot to list applicable rules before you request quotes.
- Send the lab a full bill of materials with colors and the exact model/brand name used on your listing.
- Confirm the lab is CPSC-accepted for each rule you need.
- Ask whether component test reports can reduce testing, and how they must be documented.
- Review the draft report for identifiers before it is finalized.
Check your documents before you resubmit
Upload your CPC or GCC and the test report. The free pre-check compares identifiers, cited rules, lab, dates and certifier across the documents and returns a red/amber/green list of what to fix.
Run the free pre-checkChecklist before resubmitting
- Rules listed
- BOM with colors sent
- Lab accepted for each rule
- Identifiers checked on draft
